About ASA
Statement of Purpose
The Astronomy Students Association (ASA) is founded on the principle of spreading interest in astronomy. Our goal is to promote astronomy and to flourish throughout the university as a learning community. For astronomy majors, we also serve as an academic resource in promoting departmental opportunities and events.
ASA Membership
All University of Texas students are eligible for ASA membership! Although some of our members are astronomy majors, this organization is open to all UT astronomy lovers and there are no dues or fees.
Weekly Meetings
Tuesdays at 5:30pm in PMA 15.216B
Meetings typically consist of research talks, astronomy news, advice panels, and lectures from special visitors involved in the world of astronomy. When we are not hosting a speaker, our meetings may consist of game and movie nights. Food is typically provided!
Social Events & More
We go camping once a year, and after the conclusion of the spring semester, we take a few lucky members on an observing run at the incredible McDonald Observatory. Active members who attend meetings and help volunteer for donut sales and outreach events will typically be given priority for the trip.
Outreach
ASA actively and frequently participates in community outreach events both on UT's campus and in/around the Austin area. We focus on sharing our love for astronomy through volunteering at elementary schools. We try to spark interest in the eyes of young students who may become the future generation of astronomers or space lovers with our awesome demos.
Sponsors
We are sponsored by the UT Astronomy Department and our faculty sponsor is Dr. Steven Finkelstein.
